01Overview

Ethiopia | Durato Bombe Natural

From the highlands of Ethiopia’s Sidama region comes Durato Bombe, a vibrant natural-process coffee full of sweetness and character. Grown by hundreds of smallholder farmers near the village of Durato Bombe, this coffee highlights the bold, fruit-forward qualities that make Ethiopian coffees so special. Expect juicy berry notes, tropical fruit sweetness, and a hint of rich chocolate. Lively and complex yet beautifully balanced, Durato Bombe is a wonderful example of how natural processing can bring out a coffee’s fruitiness while maintaining clarity and sweetness.

02Producer

Meet the Producer

Behind Durato Bombe is Daye Bensa Coffee, founded in 2006 by brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo. What began as a family venture has grown into an important coffee operation in Sidama, working with smallholder farming communities and operating washing stations and dry mills throughout the region. This particular lot brings together coffee from 626 farmers in and around Durato Bombe village. Through the collection and processing of their harvests, Daye Bensa helps bring the work of these individual producers to coffee drinkers around the world. It is a reminder that even a single coffee lot can represent the dedication of an entire community.

03Origin

Where it comes from

Ethiopia is widely recognized as the birthplace of Arabica coffee, and Sidama is among its most celebrated growing regions. Its mountainous landscape, high elevations, and diverse coffee varieties create ideal conditions for producing coffees with remarkable aromatic complexity and vibrant acidity. Durato Bombe takes its name from both the village and the mountain where it originates, within the Bensa district of Sidama. Grown between 2,050 and 2,150 meters above sea level, the coffee benefits from cooler growing temperatures that encourage slower cherry maturation and the development of complex flavors. The result is a distinct expression of Sidama’s extraordinary coffee-growing environment.

04Process

How it was processed

Durato Bombe undergoes natural processing, one of coffee’s oldest processing methods. Rather than removing the fruit immediately after harvest, whole coffee cherries are dried with their skins and pulp intact, allowing the fruit to influence the coffee’s developing flavor profile. At Daye Bensa’s Qunqa mill, the cherries are carefully sun-dried for up to 15 days. This approach contributes to the coffee’s pronounced fruit sweetness, wine-like complexity, and juicy character. What makes this lot especially exciting is its balance: bold strawberry and tropical fruit flavors are accompanied by delicate floral notes and a clean cocoa finish, offering all the excitement of a natural-process coffee without sacrificing clarity.

05Roast

How we roast it

Our approach to roasting Durato Bombe is centered on preserving the qualities that make this coffee so distinctive. A light roast highlights its bright fruit character, floral aromatics, and natural sweetness while allowing the coffee’s underlying complexity to shine. Rather than pushing the roast toward heavier, developed flavors, the goal is to maintain a balance between juicy acidity, sweetness, and a soft cocoa finish. The result is a lively, expressive cup that celebrates the coffee’s origin and careful processing.
